Tapping at a blast furnace

Blast_furnace_runner
Blast furnace runner

On-line monitoring of tapped hot metal amounts

Situation
• Measurement of tapped hot metal and slag amounts by:
  - Weighing of the torpedo ladles
  - Calculation of slag granulation balances
• No on-line monitoring of the tapping mass flows
• Tapping strategy based on data from previous taps

Solution
Monitoring of the flow rate in the blast furnace runner system through:
• Continuous measurement of the filling level by means of radar
• Continuous estimation of the runner cross-section by means of a
   wear model

Benefits
On-line process control:
• Improved tapping strategy
• Increased yield
• Avoidance of stoppages
