Precise control of the mould level during continuous casting is an important precondition for a good surface quality of the continuously cast product. In particular, non-steady processes can have a negative and disturbing influence on the response and behaviour of (conven-tional) closed-loop control systems in use nowadays, leading to uncontrolled meniscus oscil-lations.
A new closed-loop control strategy (from the 'Advanced Control' category) is being applied which improves mould level control in continuous casters and makes it possible to reduce metal level fluctuations. The control strategy especially combats meniscus oscillations and their impacts, which can be caused by bulging and clogging effects, for example.
