Wear, as defined by DIN 50320, incurs considerable costs in the steel industry, estimated at around 2.17 billion DM/year. Accounting for the largest share of these costs, at around 1.69 billion DM/year, is the maintenance of unlubricated (925 mill. DM/year) and lubricated tribo-systems (744 mill. DM/year). The reason for such high costs lies in the fact that the tribological problems facing the steel industry are particularly diverse.

The BFI has tribologically trained wear experts with extensive experience in the planning, conduct and evaluation of laboratory and field tests to reduce such wear-related costs.
