Shape measurement in cold rolling mills and strip processing lines is usually by means of measuring rolls designed as deflector rolls. Also the well-known BFI shapemeter roll operates on the deflector roll principle. The shapemeter roll measures the differential longitudinal stress over the strip width resulting from differently deflecting strip fibres. The roll is used for flatness control and safeguarding process stability. More than 940 BFI shapemeter rolls are successfully in operation worldwide. They are used in most different types of plants, processing strip gauges down to 6 µm. The new BFI shapemeter roll is made of a solid barrel made of roll steel. The surface is completely closed, without any gap and perfectly homogeneous over the entire barrel width.
The surface can be designed to customer specifications with:
• a hardened roll surface
• highly wear-resistant materials such as hard chromium or tungsten carbide
• elastomers (special rubber) or polyurethane
• different roughness grades or textures
• For higher strip temperatures up to 300 °C the roll barrel can also be supplied in a high-temperature design.
The roll barrel can be manufactured in different diameters and widths.
Shapemeter rolls have been designed in the following dimensions:
• Roll diameters from 160 mm to 700 mm
• Barrel widths from 550 to 2400 mm
Axially parallel bores are drilled into the roll barrel near the surface from the face side to accommodate the force transducers. These are clamped into the bores under high pretension. The robust and highly loadable quartz force transducers and non-contact, optical signal transmission make the system very reliable and virtually maintenance-free.
