Systems and Process Development

Knowledge of the actual process is of elementary importance, particularly in metal forming. Problem-free production would often be impossible without extensive empirical knowledge of the complex relations in processes.
The BFI has acquired broad expertise in this field through research and development work, enabling it in diverse ways to assist metal forming plant and equipment operators to increase productivity and improve quality. The focal aspects of its work in this connection include:

  • hot flat rolling
  • cold flat rolling
  • influencing of strip shape in strip processing lines
  • tension levelling of strip
  •  roller-straightening of beams.

Such knowledge and expertise have led to important developments, especially in the domain of flat rolling. The following, mainly patented developments deserve a mention here:

  • "Short-stroke" method
  • Shapemeter roll
  • Separating system for the rolling of slit strip.

Important developments have also been realised in downstream processes. Such as the form-fit bending unit for influencing crossbow in strip processing lines, and the technology for the flange-supported straightening of heavy beams.
