The Institute

The VDEh-Betriebsforschungsinstitut (BFI) for applied cutting-edge research has been firmly at the side of the steel and process industry for more than 50 years with around 100 scientific employees. As a legally independent and non-profit institute, we translate innovative ideas into customised operational solutions. Our aim is to use our experience and technical expertise as a dynamic partner for applied research in a globally challenging environment to sustainably position companies in the steel and process industry and advance them technologically. With this in mind, we work with confidentiality, flexibility and efficiency, are internationally networked and use relevant national and European funding programmes to reduce the financial risks of our industrial research partners.

As part of our research activities, we formulate research proposals together with you, put together consortia according to the technical task and the requirements of the funding organisations and coordinate the project management, including support with the administrative processing vis-à-vis the funding organisations. We support you in the further development of system components and measurement technology and offer you our service for integrating our solutions into existing production and operating processes.

We offer technical advice, studies, simulation calculations, measurement campaigns on our own laboratory and technical centre facilities as well as on the operating facilities in your company as part of contract research and services. In the area of technical exchange and further training, we organise tailor-made seminars on current topics as well as our annual BFI colloquium and offer you the opportunity to exchange ideas with other companies on technical issues in compliance with antitrust law by participating in our industry projects.
