Important milestone in ‘H2Stahl’ - research project for hydrogen-based direct reduction in Duisburg

The engineering for the construction of a direct reduction test plant, including HAZOP, has been successfully completed and the core components were ordered for manufacturing. This means that the build-up of the test plant, as well as the special investigations which are already underway in the BFI's technical centre, are on schedule despite challenging times. The basis for supporting industrial, climate-neutral steel production in Duisburg at thyssenkrupp Steel has thus been laid. Together with the ‘DRI smelter’ research project funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the test plant will map future steel production in the combination of direct reduction and smelter and answer essential technical questions on the safe and trouble-free operation of large-scale industrial plants.

The research is being carried out in close co-operation between the VDEh-Betriebsforschungsinstitut (BFI) and thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG. The test plant will be developed and build by TS Elino GmbH.

Many thanks to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection for funding this important project for the transformation of the German steel industry.
