Meeting at Spectral Industries

As part of the DiGreeS project (Demonstration of Digital twins for a Green Steel value chain) a meeting was held on 5th June 2025 at Spectral Industries in Delft/Netherlands focused on the discussion of technical details regarding the sensors used in Use Case 1, specifically targeting on the verification of heavy melting scrap (HMS).

Thank you, Spectral Industries, for hosting a well-organised and very productive meeting and the chance to visit the “LIBS laboratory”.

The goal of the use case is to enable improved and reliable scrap characterization based on the combination and integration of LIBS analysis, camera monitoring and AI-based image analysis. This approach helps to allow operator-friendly sorting and improves the separation of materials thereby reducing the impurities in the targeted steel heat.

In this project, innovative measurement techniques in combination with digital twins of the individual processes are developed in three use cases along the process chain of steel production and linked for an energy- and resource-saving process control.

The project consortium led by the Fraunhofer Institute comprises a total of 10 partners from 5 European countries. Further information on the research project can be found on the project's homepage.

The project is funded as part of the Clean Steel Partnership of the Horizon Europe Programme of the European Union.
