Creation of an NH3 supply at the BFI's high-temperature pilot plant
On August 15, 2025, state funding was approved for the BFI investment project “NH3-Infra,” which will establish an NH3 supply at the BFI's high-temperature pilot plant. Together with the H2 supply already commissioned in 2023, the new NH3 supply (2 t NH3 storage) will create an additional prerequisite for conducting bilateral and funded research on topics such as “decarbonization of the process industry.”
The NH3 extraction (liquid or gaseous) with downstream control systems enables burner tests on an industrial scale of up to 1 MW nominal power. In addition, customized gas analysis systems for fuel gas, exhaust gas, and traversing in the combustion chamber at the high-temperature technical center will be procured. For the first time, a laser system for analyzing the moist exhaust gas will be installed for this purpose. All components are configured as mobile units so that they can also be used externally if required. Commissioning of the new NH3 supply, including gas analysis systems, is scheduled to be completed in September 2026. Initial research proposals for burner investigations with NH3 are currently being prepared.
