Success Story of the ALCHIMIA Research Project
In its 2026 annual report, the “National Contact Point for Digital and Industrial Technologies” (NKS DIT), on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), presents ALCHIMIA as one of ten German success stories from EU research projects in the field of digital technologies. The aim of the project was to improve the energy efficiency of European steel plants through Artificial Intelligence.
As a project partner, BFI contributed, among other things, the following:
- an optimization model for the online operation of the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF)
- optimization models for scrap characterization and scrap mix optimization
- a study on Federated Learning to enable AI-based knowledge exchange across the network (in collaboration with the project partners)
- data integration tasks for the optimization models (in collaboration with the project partners)
- technical coordination
