Kick-off meeting for research project AI4EAFRoute

On July 1, 2026, the kick-off meeting for the newly launched research project AI4EAFRoute (Artificial Intelligence Supporting Innovative EAF Route Methods for Process and Plant Management to Enhance Performance and Component Effectiveness) took place.

The project aims to improve the performance, reliability, and sustainability of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steelmaking through advanced monitoring technologies and artificial intelligence (AI). Four use cases address scrap melting management, optimization of electrical parameters, component and event management, and overall performance monitoring. The resulting AI solutions will support operators with real-time recommendations for more efficient and reliable EAF operation.

In close collaboration with SIDENOR, BFI focuses on the development and validation of models for critical EAF components, including a finite element (FEM) and wear model for refractory lining monitoring as well as a wear model for electrodes.

The project is funded by the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) and coordinated by RINA-CSM. The consortium brings together leading European industry and research partners to advance AI-based solutions for EAF operations and support the decarbonization of the steel industry.

Further information and the project website will follow soon.
