Cooperation with the Chair for Iron and Steel Metallurgy at the Technical University of Leoben

To support the future assessment of increased steel scrap recycling and the associated changes in material flows and process routes, Montanuniversität Leoben (MUL) and BFI are jointly establishing a scientific link between the upstream and downstream stages of steel production.

Test specimens bent at MUL and containing defined defects are reheated under conditions representative of industrial practice and subsequently descaled using different process parameter sets.

These investigations make it possible to determine and evaluate the influence of furnace operating conditions and descaling parameters on the removal of scale and low-melting phases from the steel surface.

Together, MUL and BFI are making an important contribution to assessing the risk of product quality deterioration in future steel manufacturing processes.
