BioCOnversion – Bioconversion of CO/syngas into a plastic precursor

Initial situation

  • Process gases from the steelworks are currently used thermally or are converted into electricity.
  • CO-containing process gases are valuable raw material streams for the biotechnological production of platform chemicals.
  • The provision of mid-chain carbon compounds with multifunctional groups, which are currently produced from fossil resources, is of particular interest to many industrial sectors.

Working points in the project

  • Preparation of an evaluation report based on existing real process gas data from the steel industry as a basis for strain development.
  • Development of individual process steps and a suitable process design will be investigated using biocatalyst systems.
  • Experimental validation and optimization of the entire process.
  • Evaluation of the opportunities for realization of the industrial biotechnological conversion of CO-containing process gases into valuable products.

Desired results

  • Develop process steps that include the conversion of CO/syngas into an intermediate through gas fermentation and its enzymatic upgrading conversion to a defined plastic precursor.
  • Set up a concept, which allows the integration of biotechnological processes in the gas network of the steelwork.
  • Create possibilities for a transferability of the process into application-related standards.
