DESTINY - Development of an Efficient microwave System for material Transformation in energy INtensive processes for an improved Yield

Initial situation:
- Steel production is an energy-intensive process due to the chemical energy required to reduce the iron ore with the help of reducing agents.
- Most ores and recycling materials have to be processed using a lot of energy from fossil sources, as they generally do not have the right composition and grain size.
Project targets:
- The DESTINY process is intended to enable the utilisation of extremely zinc-rich residues, which are converted into valuable iron and zinc-containing raw materials for iron and steel production.
- The DESTINY process should also contribute to reducing CO2 generation, as microwave heating is very effective and is generated by electrical energy.
Innovative approaches:
- Development of a novel reduction process using microwave irradiation
- Design and manufacture of microwave ovens in containers
- Online monitoring and control
Benefits for the industry:
- Reduction in the consumption of resources
- Reduction of energy requirements and CO2 emissions
- Reduction of investment and operating costs
- Flexibility in the selection of raw materials and materials
