DissHEAT – Dissemination of the heating technology research results for emission minimization and process optimization towards todays fossil-free heating agenda

Background

  • Over the past 30 years, the steel industry has reduced their emissions by over 25% and is aiming for climate neutrality by 2050 to meet the ambitions of the European Green Deal.
  • The EU steel industry accounts for 221 Mt/a greenhouse gas emissions which adds up to 5.7% of total emissions in the EU.
  • Of these, CO2 emissions generated by the reheating processes required for steel processing amount to 5.5% accompanied by other emissions such as NOx, according to an EU study.
  • EU-wide research over the past 25 years has targeted these industrial furnaces and thermal processes for efficiency and flexibility, especially to reduce environmental impact and increase product quality.
  • Current developments for non-fossil fuel steelmaking and changing energy markets are causing new conditions for the reheating processes.

Project objectives

  • The DissHEAT collaborative project is a research project funded by the Research Fund for Coal and Seel RFCS to analyze the research and development R&D of the past 25 years in the field of reheating and thermoprocessing technology (downstream) for processing steel in rolling mills and forges.
  • The aim of the BFI’s work is to analyze and classify research reports and publications in the field of heating and industrial furnace technology, to discuss this together with project partners and experts from the steel industry and plant engineering, and from this to bring together the future relevant research fields and issues in the form of a research roadmap.

Innovative approaches

  • Compile findings and results from R&D in the field of industrial furnace technology in the steel industry and other industrial sectors and analyse them with regard to future research activities required for the
    • Decarbonization and modernization of the steel sector.
    • Fossil-free steelmaking processes

to elaborate and provide an overview of current research.

  • Formulate a research road map focused on fossil-free applications such as H2 use, electric, hybrid and flexi-fuel heating and identify specific research needs.

Potential benefits for industry

  • Roadmap and specific approaches for future process and product improvements for a fossil-free reheating of steel.
