FlexElectricSteel – Intraday Energy Management for Electric Steel Plants

Initial Situation

  • Fluctuating energy supply requires new approaches to energy flexibility also in the electric steel production sector.
  • Determination of energy planning in production must be adapted to enable shorter response times, higher temporal resolution, accuracy and reliability in forecasting electricity demand.
  • Links to the enterprise resource planning system in the company, among others, as well as adjustments in the automation and information levels are required.
  • Electricity procurement through participation in continuous intraday trading should be optimized.

Project goals

  • Electric steel mills should be enabled to have energy-flexible production in order to maximize the use of renewable energy in the industrial environment.

Innovative approaches

  • Development of a new planning platform within the company taking into account production, maintenance, energy flow as well as production planning data.
  • Use of historical, current, and forecast data with AI-powered tools for continuously adjusted, optimized energy reference planning.

Potential benefits for industry

  • Demand-responsive energy planning enables economic optimization of energy procurement.
  • Avoidance of peak loads, minimization of balancing energy, and future participation in the marketing of energy flexibility.
