Green Steel for Europe

Initial situation:

The European Union set concrete targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in terms of its 2030 climate & energy framework and its 2050 long-term strategy for a climate neutrality. In order to achieve these goals, a transformation of iron and steel production towards CO2-lean or climate-neutral production technologies is necessary. Against this background, “Green Steel for Europe” supports the EU in achieving its climate and energy goals.

Work Packages:

  • Technology roadmapping
  • Investment and funding
  • Impact Assessment
  • Dissemination and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Project Management

Intended results:

  • Development of a technology roadmap, identification of necessary preconditions and forecasting of short and long-term scenarios for decarbonisation of the EU steel industry.
  • Identification of public and private funding opportunities and proposal of options for blending and sequencing.
  • Assessment of economic, social, environmental and industrial impacts of decarbonisation and analysis of policy options at EU level.
  • Dissemination of project results and intensive involvement of relevant EU Stakeholders.
