InnoGuss – Development of innovative transformation paths for the decarbonization of the foundry industry in NRW

Background

  • The German government aims to reduce the GHG emissions in Germany by at least 55% by 2030 and to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality for Germany by 2050
  • According to the German Federal Statistical Office, the total energy demand of German foundries was around 12.4 TWh in 2019 and thus contributed to around one percent of Germany’s overall CO2 emissions
  • The foundry industry in NRW does not have any tools at its disposal to evaluate different technology scenarios in regards to their technological and economic feasibility

Objectives

  • Identification of possibilities as well as necessary boundary conditions for the systematic decarbonization of the foundry industry and possible intermediate steps (e. g. mixed gases, supply networks, etc.)
  • Identification of possible technology paths for the companies

Innovative content

  • Holistic approach for the foundry industry in NRW to increase energy efficiency and systematically reduce GHG emissions

Potential benefits for the industry

  • Compass to support the foundries in their operational strategy for the further development of climate protection measures regarding to their different structure
