OMiAS - Optical online measurement method for in-situ analysis of the chemical composition of a steel melt during liquid steel production

Initial situation:
- The chemical composition has a major influence on the properties of steel
- Until now, no operational technology is available for online analysis of the composition
- The laboratory analysis of steel samples to determine the process status is only available with a delay of about five minutes, which results in a significant extension of the process time and thus a loss of productivity
Project targets:
- A fibre optical online measurement method for determining the concentration of chemical elements in a steel melt is to be developed and tested on a pilot scale
Innovative approaches:
- The basic idea of the measuring method is to record the reflection spectrum inside a steel melt via an immersed optical fibre
- The shape of the reflection spectrum is used to determine the element concentration in the melt using data-based evaluation algorithms
Benefits for the industry:
- Immediate provision of analysis results for online process control
- Reduction of process times
- Increased productivity
- Reduction of energy and material consumption
- Improved work safety
