RekCarb – Upcycle of carbon containing residuals and by-products through recrystallisation in molten metals

Initial Situation:

Surplus of C-residuals

  • Many carbon containing residuals are yet either burned or landfilled
  • The chemical potential of carbon containing residuals often remains unused, since economically feasible processes for the recycling of carbon containing residuals are not established.
  • Examples for C-containing residuals or by-products:
    • Polymeric residues
    • Carbon black

Shortage of C-nanomaterial

  • Carbon-nanomaterials have many desired properties
  • Possible applications are manifold:
    • Additive in composite materials
    • Functional component in coatings

Objectives:

  • Development of a new process concept for the manufacturing of carbon nano materials
  • Upcycle of residuals

Agenda:

  • Conceptual design and construction of an experimental setup for the re-crystallisation
  • Investigation of optimal conditions for recrystallisation of Carbon
    • Composition of the fusible alloy
    • Temperature control
    • Influence of feedstock material
  • Injection of carbon containing material
  • Conceptual design for the separation of the carbon nano material from the melt
  • Investigation of the chemical composition and morphology of the carbon nano material
